The best weekends are those spent hiking, exploring nature and relaxing
Do you absolutely crave a quick escape from the daily grind? Mpumalanga might just be the best destination for you, with its bewilderingly beautiful landscapes, and endless adventure opportunities.
At Bermanzi, we’ve become the perfect place for weekend warriors from Gauteng and we’ve curated this fun itinerary for those looking to cram the best of Mpumalanga into 48 revitalising hours.
Day 1: Getting to know the Panorama
Start your Friday morning with a scenic drive along the N4 towards Nelspruit. As you leave the city, you will smell that fresh Mpumalanga air and if you keep your eyes peeled, you might even start seeing wildlife sightings along the way.
Starting at the furthest point from your final destination, your first stop will be the iconic Blyde River Canyon, the world’s third-largest canyon. While in the area you can visit God’s Window, where you will be treated to spectacular panoramic views from God’s Window, a natural lookout point offering breathtaking vistas of the Drakensberg escarpment.
For the thrill-seekers, an afternoon hike on the challenging Panorama Loop Trail, or at least part of the trail, is a great way to stretch your legs. This 12km circular route offers stunning views of the canyon, with viewpoints like the Three Rondavels and Bourke’s Luck Potholes all adding to the geological drama. For a less strenuous option, you can take on the short and scenic Lowveld View Trail.
(Be sure to make bookings or get the necessary permits before you head off on a trail)
Day 2: Hiking, Exploring, and Rejuvenating
After a restful night’s sleep, you will pack up and head to Bermanzi.
Located near Machadodorp (now called eNtokozweni), this private self-catering lodge boasts a network of well-maintained trails suitable for all fitness levels. After a day of hiking and enjoying the sights, you can return to your self-catered accommodation where you can whip up a delicious meal and enjoy the stunning star-filled sky.
Sunday: Saying Farewell to Mpumalanga!
On Sunday, you will be taking the long and lazy drive back to Johannesburg, reminiscing about the adventure-filled weekend. Don’t forget to stop at some of the roadside stalls selling local fruits and artisanal crafts, the perfect souvenirs to take back a piece of Mpumalanga’s magic.
